I wouldn't have made this show for myself. I wouldn't expect interest in every scrap of paper I've ever scribbled on, stray phrases and artifacts. So I'm tremendously grateful to Brent for putting it together, for seeing the potential of this collection to trace out the view behind it. Brent's curiosity about artists' creative practices holds all of these pieces together. And his clarity and vision makes discernible the conceptual space from which this work arose.

Brent's choice of venue is a feat of imagination. A half rented mall, like a societal EKG. Inside, an empty movie theater. An overstock clearance store. Social services, an employment center. Vending machines and video games humming in stasis. A leaky roof. Cavernous. Public; not public. Architecture meant for a different economy. The elements creeping in and taking back. And in the middle, in an illuminated kiosk, a showcase of work concerned with just those things. It couldn't be more fitting.
