These paintings have an element of uncertainty built in. They start with little or no plan, sometimes without even an image or intention in mind. This brings an openness and sense of discovery. Like sketching in a sketchbook, I give the work loose reins. Working feels more like directing a process than rendering imagery. There's a sense that it evolves with its own desires. Wispy movements become forms, and upended structures evaporate back into just paint.
